Daily Spark Word: Fill

Off you go, you wonderful poets!

full

there comes a time
when the glass must
over
flow

where do you catch
the spilled liquid?
in your
hands

I have always been interested by E E Cummings and his unique approach to layout and punctuation. I only just received his six nonlectures in the post yesterday. I do get frustrated by a lot of his stuff but it doesn't stop me coming back for more. One poem I've always liked is this one:

l(a
le
af
fa
ll
s)
one
l
iness

There's a nice essay about it by Lewis Turco: Corn And Creativity: The Paradoxes of E. E. Cummings

Anyway, using that as a starting point, here’s my solution to today's problem:

Empty

un
(fu
ll)

fi
ll
ed

Unlike Cummings, who was not one for titles, I have given this poem one. When something is unfilled it is emptied, it is no longer full; an unfulfilled person is full of emptiness. The word "full" is completely contained within "unfulfilled" just as when we say we are full, that fullness is contained within us; it does not become us.

Thanks Jim and Kevin! I like the way you have both used unusual structures to get your meaning across :) I look forward to reading more!

And Jim, it's interesting to see how much thought you put behind your words. Thank you!

Thanks, but I'm lousy at poetry. Besides, you're doing just fine. You don't my help :)

Ah! It's not about me needing help, Stella, it's about writing for the sake of writing. If inspiration ever grabs you, feel free to give one of the challenges a go!
